Impact of iPad Pro on PLM technologies

iPad Pro with Pencil

During annual launch of Apple devices last week, one item which excited me most is the iPad Pro. iPad Pro brings in the “PENCIL” along with design capabilities to a touch screen. These kind of solutions existed, but were not supported by a platform. Other attractive feature of iPad pro is it’s processing capacity. With more than double processing speed & fast graphics.

iPad Pro can be leaveraged by CAD modellers in a totally different way. I think the efficiency of CAD design and modelling can increase to a great extent. PLM Vendors especially CAD vendors should look at the capability of iPad Pro and bring in design softwares to iPad Pro. There will be couple of challenges bringing CAD solutions to iPad

  1. Size of Data required to load an assembly is huge
  2. Current interfaces are more desktop driven, will need a full revamp of UI

Apart from CAD vendors, PLM vendors will also be required to support design management process from iPad interface and develop efficient ways to search, update and create new CAD / BOM / Product information.

iPad Pro can definitely change the way products are designed. All players which support product design will need to change the way their products are designed to support new technologies.

Conclusion: iPad Pro with its features such as Pencil, processor and keyboard will definitely replace lot of designer desktop in coming future. It will depend on how well the CAD & PLM vendor adopt to the changes required to support touch screen devices. These are just initial thoughts ..
